The Trump Organization—led by his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump—has announced the launch of a new mobile phone service and a $499 gold smartphone, further tapping into the family’s influential brand. The new service, Trump Mobile, will offer a unique $47.45 per month plan, a nod to Trump's term as the 47th president, providing unlimited talk, text, and data. This announcement, which occurred on Monday at Trump Tower in NYC, coincides with the 10th anniversary of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign launch, marking a decade since his significant escalator moment.

According to the Guardian, the gold-cased T1 smartphone, available in September, flaunts a 6.8-inch display, a 50MP main camera, and a robust 5000mAh battery. Running on Android 15, the device revives the headphone jack, a declining feature in recent smartphone models. The Guardian reports that the product positions itself as a luxury item, aiming to attract consumers with its unique branding.

Potential conflicts

The entry into the telecommunications market by President Trump's business raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest. With Trump's ongoing role overseeing federal agencies, including the Federal Communications Commission, the Guardian reported that there are questions about impartial regulatory oversight; Brendan Carr, FCC Chairman, faces an added layer of complexity given this new venture.

According to CNBC, Trump Mobile operates through licensing deals, which generated over $8 million for Trump in 2024. As these ventures grow, critics worry about the ethical implications of combining commercial interests with political power.

While traditional carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T dominate the market, the Trump Organization claims on its website that its coverage competes directly with these giants. Despite the enthusiasm from Trump's supporters, the long-term competitive viability of Trump Mobile remains uncertain as it enters the saturated U.S. telecom market.
