Tiger Woods scored 4 over 74 in the first round of the U.S. Open on Thursday, according to PGA Tour. Wood's performance showcased his skills while still struggling with some unruly shots, indicating the 15-time major winning golf pro will need to step it up in order to snag a 16th victory.

According to PGA Tour, Woods' 4-over opening round included a birdie at the 10th hole, momentarily placing him in the lead. Woods ultimately fell from the first place spot after five consecutive pars and seven bogeys.

According to PGA TOUR, Woods' primary issues stemmed not from his tee shots but from his approach play and putting, hitting only nine greens while seven of his nine attempted birdies extended past 30 feet. Despite missing the cut for the PGA Championship in May, Woods told PGA Tour that he is "physically getting better as the year has gone on."

Concerns about Woods' performance are centered not on his swing or talent but on his capacity to preserve his body for four days of a major championship and quickly eliminate competitive rust. As he progresses into the next rounds of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, where he has previously finished third and runner-up in past championships, Woods faces the challenge of refining his first-round performance.
