World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police Friday morning after attempting to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, where the PGA Championship will be held. A fatal accident involving a shuttle bus and a pedestrian had occurred earlier outside the club, and traffic had been stopped as a result. Scheffler faces several charges including second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. Scheffler was released without bail and arrived at Valhalla for the PGA Championship less than an hour before his scheduled tee time, according to ESPN.
Earlier on Friday, a man was fatally struck by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club around 5 a.m. ET, reports the P & G TOUR. The Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson, Dwight Mitchell, told local radio station NewsRadio 840 WHAS that the man was crossing the road when the bus failed to see him and struck him. The second round of the PGA Championship was delayed by an hour and a half as a result of the accident.
In a statement, Scheffler said he had been proceeding as directed by police officers during a chaotic situation and that there had been a misunderstanding. Scheffler's attorney, Steven Romines, told ESPN that his client had been attempting to enter Valhalla Golf Club as he had been instructed to earlier, unaware of the traffic accident and the change in traffic patterns. Romines said the officer who attempted to stop Scheffler was not part of the regular event-traffic detail at Valhalla Golf Club, which resulted in miscommunication.
The PGA of America extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the worker who was struck and killed in the accident. The organization called the incident "heartbreaking" for everyone involved in the PGA Championship. Scheffler, 27, has won four of his past five starts, including his second major championship at the Masters in April.
