Four seasons of fun: Embracing Chicago’s lakefront this fall

With crisp air and amber-hued skies, Chicago’s Lake Michigan lakefront transforms into an autumn playground. From haunted boat cruises to leaf-strewn trails and seasonal festivals, here’s how city residents and visitors alike can savor fall’s splendor along the water’s edge.

Boat tours

For a spine-tingling spin on lakefront views, City Cruises offers several Halloween-themed voyages. The Seadog Haunted River Tour invites guests aboard the Seadog for a 75-minute nighttime adventure on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. Costumed guides lead riders past the city’s landmark skyline, and participants are encouraged to “put on your best Halloween costume and enjoy a Spooktacular fall evening,” running nightly from Wednesday, Oct. 1, through Thursday, Oct. 31.

Those seeking a campier cruise can step aboard the Spirit of Chicago for Divas After Dark: Halloween Drag Show, where drag performers combine lip-sync theatrics with breathtaking lake views. And for another dose of eerie ambiance, the Sherman & Tingle Haunted Cruise aboard the Odyssey navigates Lake Michigan’s dark waters, complete with ghostly stories and onboard thrills.

Festivals

Each September, Chicago Gourmet transforms Millennium Park into a lakeside epicurean playground, featuring more than 100 distinguished chefs who pour, plate, and pair world-class dishes and drinks against the city skyline. The four-day festival, Thursday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 28, includes marquee events such as Tacos & Tequila, Hamburger Hop, and the exclusive Grand Cru wine tasting on the Harris Theater Rooftop, inviting food lovers to sample everything from gourmet tacos to award-winning burgers under the autumn sky. Additionally, Chicago Gourmet’s pre-festival Culinary World Series hosts unique, sports-themed dinners throughout September, including Dining on the NASCAR Track and Game Day Gourmet at Guaranteed Rate Field, extending the season’s gourmet flair across the city. 

Meanwhile, just a short stroll away at Navy Pier, there are all kinds of fall fun coming up, including Slightly Spooky Saturday, the last weekend of October. Also during October, Margaritaville at Navy Pier is hosting its annual Halloween Bash on Sunday, October 26.
