Lyric Opera of Chicago offers family opera adventures under $10 at “Explore Your Lyric”

The Lyric Opera of Chicago is offering budget-friendly fun for families this spring. Its newest upcoming event, “Explore Your Lyric,” brings kids and parents behind-the-scenes at the opera house, where young audiences can discover the thrill of live theater and music. Tickets start at $5 for children and $10 for adults.

“Explore Your Lyric” opens on Sunday, April 26. Families can opt for an 11 a.m. or noon entry for hands-on art-making activities, dancing and more. 

Circus demonstrations are set to thrill visitors, the website states. Face painting adds color to the day. Guests will have the opportunity to peek into the orchestra pit. Additionally, a shortened performance of “Katie: The Strongest of the Strong” caps the fun.

"Venture beyond the footlights for a day where we open the curtains for an afternoon of discovery and delight throughout the opera house," said the Lyric Opera of Chicago in its announcement.

Free opera for young fans

The full “Katie: The Strongest of the Strong” performs free in neighborhoods, according to the press release. This opera honors circus strongwoman Katie Sandwina. She earned fame as "the strongest woman in the world."

Sandwina balanced strength with family life. According to the opera house’s announcement, she advocated for women's suffrage. An all-female cast brings her story alive.

Performances hit Saturday, May 2, at 2 p.m. in Kennedy-King College. The next show runs Sunday, May 3, at 3 p.m. at Merit School of Music.

Tickets for neighborhood shows are free, but seating limits mean quick reservations. These outings build family bonds through art.
