“Street Fighter” movie hype builds as new poster and trailer drops ahead of October premiere

The “Street Fighter” movie is ramping up excitement six months before its Friday, Oct. 16 premiere. According to Yahoo Entertainment, Paramount dropped character posters and a fresh trailer at CinemaCon. WWE stars shine as Cody Rhodes plays heroic Guile with a high-top fade. Roman Reigns embodies anti-hero Akuma, complete with red hair and eyes.

Producers reportedly kept Rhodes and Reigns apart on set, fearing real scraps, due to what Rhodes describes as “a crazy relationship" between the two, Yahoo Entertainment reports. He pushed for his own stunts, but noted stunt doubles helped too.

WWE stars gear up for WrestleMania 

Rhodes defends the Undisputed WWE Championship against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 42 Night One, Yahoo confirms. Reigns challenges CM Punk for the WWE World Heavyweight title on Night Two. Both juggle wrestling fame with “Street Fighter” roles. Fans of the game should love the “fan service,” Rhodes added.

Set in 1993, the film follows estranged friends Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo). Mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) pulls them into the World Warrior Tournament, a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury. A deadly conspiracy lurks behind the battles, forcing them to confront each other and past demons.

Director Kitao Sakurai stresses friendship as high stakes. "I like making stories about friendship, and for me, friendship is very high stakes," Sakurai tellsUSA TODAY at CinemaCon. “It was important for me to have this very strong through line of the mending of this relationship."

The movie blends epic kicks, punches, and humor with real "tactile" action. Influences include Jackie Chan, Jet Li, the Three Stooges, and anime, USA Today confirmed. Sakurai aimed for the game's crazy, "irreverent" vibe over digital effects.

Star-packed cast shows real investment in the game 

A star-packed cast fills supporting roles. Jason Momoa joins wrestlers Rhodes and Reigns (Joe Anoa'i), MMA fighter Alexander Volkanovski, rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, and singer Orville Peck. "Everybody that was in this movie, they grew up on this game," Sakurai says to USA TODAY.

No egos marred the set, he noted. That chemistry sparked something special. The trailer teases fireballs, uppercuts, and emotional depth.

Sakurai cheered rival “Mortal Kombat II,” out on Friday, May 8. "I want 'Mortal Kombat' to work," he told USA TODAY. Both films honor '90s game camps.
