Pig races, pumpkins, patriotism: “World’s Largest” Corn Maze opens at Richardson Adventure Farm

Richardson Adventure Farm’s “World’s Largest” Corn Maze opens Saturday, Sept. 12, bringing back a fall staple that draws about 100,000 visitors a year to Spring Grove, Ill. According to the farm’s announcement, this season’s maze covers 28 acres and stretches across 9.7 miles of trails, with new amenities, expanded play areas and an updated design honoring America250.

The maze features signers of the Declaration of Independence, a Betsy Ross flag, an American Eagle, and other patriotic images, the farm confirmed. “I’m excited for our farm to display a fantastic maze celebrating America250,” said Ryan Richardson, per the press release, who operates the farm with family members, including Kristen, George, Wendy, Robert and Carol. “It’s a great time to appreciate the country and the freedoms we all share.”

More than a maze

The corn maze is only part of the draw at 909 English Prairie Road. According to the press release, visitors can also find pig races, giant slides, pedal karts, jumping pillows, a zip line, an antique carousel, train rides, wagon rides, a petting zoo, pumpkins, mums, homemade donuts, fudge, craft beer and a 50-foot observation tower.

The farm is also adding to its grounds. Reconstruction of an 1876-era octagon barn is underway, and the low ropes course for children has been expanded. Ryan Richardson said the farm also added a fourth jumpy pillow, improved kids’ play areas, and a refreshed concession barn menu.

Wendy Richardson confirmed that the Barrel House now has new windows and garage-style glass doors so it can open to the fall air. The space serves four craft varieties from 9th Hour Brewing.

Campfire rentals remain a major attraction, with 100 sites available for four-hour periods. Prices range from $130 for a one-table site to $290 for a larger site with five picnic tables, and guests may bring their own grill or cook over the fire. “We provide the firewood,” George Richardson said, according to the announcement.

The farm is dog-friendly, and leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome. September hours are 3 to 11 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays, and noon to 9 p.m. Sundays. October hours shift to 3 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and noon to 9 p.m. Sundays. The farm stays open through Sunday, Nov. 1.

Admission starts at $22 for children ages 4 to 12 in September and rises to $32 for adults on October weekends. Parking is free, and tickets are available online or at the gate.
