What to Know before you set sail

Before booking your voyage, read these tips to help you and your friends stay safe on the waters.

  • Persons aged 21 and older may operate boating vessels; persons under the age of 21 but older than 10 can use a boat only if they obtain the proper safety certifications.

  • The state of Illinois prohibits anyone from operating a boating vessel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Vessels on Lake Michigan must be equipped with visual distress beacons in the case of an emergency.
