Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera performs annual 'Rising Stars in Concert'

On Saturday, May 6, the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago showcased its  annual Rising Stars in Concert performance at the Lyric Opera House. Accompanied by members of the Lyric Opera orchestra, up-and-coming artists sang their hearts out while performing a wide variety of repertoire, including work by Richard Strauss, Charles Gounod, Richard Wagner, and Gioachino Rossini. 

Featured singers from the 2022/23 Ryan Opera Center Ensemble included sopranos Kathryn Henry, Lindsey Reynolds, and Denis Vélez; mezzo-soprano Katherine DeYoung; tenors Ryan Cappozzo, Lunga Eric Hallam, and Alejandro Luévanos; baritones Laureano Quant and Ian Rucker; and bass Wm. Clay Thompson. Making their debuts with Lyric Opera were orchestra conductor Roberto Kalb and stage director Crystal Manich.

Though in training while at the Ryan Opera Center, many of the singers get to perform in professional works put on by the Lyric Opera House. Some of those performances include Le Comte Ory, Don Carlos, Carmen, and Ernani.

Three of the artists in the Rising Stars in Concert performance — Katherine DeYoung, Lunga Eric Hallam, and Denis Vélez — have concluded their tenure with the Ryan Opera Center to pursue careers nationally and internationally.
