The Chicago City Council has introduced a symbolic ordinance to permanently etch the legacy of legendary performance artist Chilli Pepper into the city's cityscape. Sponsored by Downtown Alderman Brian Hopkins, the legislation establishes an honorary street designation—"Honorary Chilli Pepper Way"—to commemorate the trailblazing icon who transformed Chicago’s drag culture and championed HIV/AIDS activism before passing away in September 2024. The formal street-naming ceremony is scheduled to take place on October 3, dedicated in honor of her birthday.

The proposed honorary brown street signs will be erected in Chicago's historic Gold Coast neighborhood. Backed by a coalition of city leaders including Alpana Singh, the ordinance carries the explicit co-sponsorship of Aldermen Timmy Knudsen,  Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, Andre Vasquez, Bennett Lawson, Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, and Maria Hadden.

The designation will specifically honor a corner of N. State Parkway and E. Division Street near 1201 N. State Street, where Chilli lived and maintained her residence. The street designation will apply along the 1200 block of N. State Parkway, encompassing the neighborhood where she built her daily life, interacted with her local community and spent her years. By positioning the tribute here rather than outside her former nightlife venue, the city honors the place where she lived and was part of the surrounding community.

According to the Chicago Department of Transportation guidelines, the honorary designation will feature two brown signs installed at the boundaries of the designated stretch to mark her presence in the neighborhood's history.

Rising to stardom in an era when drag performance faced routine police raids and systemic marginalization, Chilli Pepper achieved massive crossover success. She captured the title of Miss Gay Chicago in 1974 and made national history as the first-ever winner of the prestigious Miss Continental pageant in 1980. For 50 years, she reigned as the star attraction at The Baton Show Lounge, helping anchor its original River North location before the club relocated to Uptown. She became one of the first drag artists in mainstream living rooms, appearing as a recurring national talk show guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Phil Donahue Show. Beyond the glamour, Chilli Pepper was a crucial, early voice during the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, utilizing her celebrity status to raise vital funds, combat stigma and demand government transparency when few others would speak out.

Everyone whose life was touched by Chilli Pepper is warmly invited to join this very special occasion.
