Dear Wildlife Watcher: This story is heartbreaking on so many levels. William Chapman, a young man in his 20s, died after entering an enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park and being attacked by a Siberian tiger named Altai. His family has spoken about his struggles with mental illness and, understandably, has asked for privacy while grieving an unimaginable loss.
The first thing we should remember is that this was a human tragedy, not entertainment for social media. The family has also urged people to stop circulating videos of the incident. I couldn't agree more. There is a difference between reporting a newsworthy event and turning someone's final moments into viral content.
And then there is the tiger. Altai was behaving like a tiger, not a house cat. These are magnificent, powerful wild animals, and no amount of curiosity, bravado or desire for a selfie makes entering their enclosure worth the risk. Thankfully and wisely, authorities have confirmed the tiger will not be euthanized as the incident is investigated.
My heart goes out to Chapman's family. I hope people will respect their wishes, resist the temptation to share disturbing footage and remember that barriers at wildlife parks exist for a reason. Heed them!

Dear Candid Candace: Now for something on the other end of the news spectrum. Kelly Clarkson is making headlines after accusing a Brooklyn specialty store, Art of Play, of treating her as though she couldn't afford something she wanted to buy. She compared the experience to the famous shopping scene in Pretty Woman. The store has a different version of events, and surveillance footage has since surfaced, although it has no audio. Did Kelly have a right to call out bad customer service, or did this become a case of a celebrity using her megaphone against a small business?
Signed: Bird-Watching in Brooklyn
Dear Bird-Watching: According to reports, Clarkson visited Art of Play looking at a remarkable ($15K ???) singing-bird automaton. She felt she was being treated as though she couldn't afford the item, while the store says the bird she wanted was a display piece and not for sale (even though it allegedly sported a price tag). The two sides have publicly disputed what happened, and the recently released surveillance footage doesn't settle the matter because there is no sound.

Here's where I land: Everyone deserves courteous customer service, whether they're a Grammy-winning superstar or someone shopping on a Saturday afternoon. If Kelly felt dismissed, she had every right to be disappointed. But naming a small business on social media is a powerful move when millions of people may take your word as gospel.
The store says the fallout has included angry messages, negative reviews and even unwanted attention in person. That's a steep price for a dispute over a very expensive bird. Online outrage can take on a life of its own, and a celebrity's followers don't always stop to consider the other side of the story.
And, from what I've seen, the store owner hasn't been very convincing in his "apology."
My advice? If you're a public figure, pause before posting. If you're a business owner, do your best to make every customer feel welcome. And if you're one of the millions watching from the sidelines, remember that a silent surveillance video can't tell us everything.
As for me, I'll watch my birds at the birdfeeder. And if I ever find myself in a Pretty Woman moment, I hope I have the good sense to keep my cool, pay for what I can and leave the drama to Hollywood.
Candidly yours, Candace
