All eyes in the culinary world were on Chicago as the prestigious James Beard Awards celebrated excellence in food, beverage and hospitality on June 15. Widely regarded as the “Oscars of the food world,” the annual event once again cemented the city's reputation as one of America's premier dining destinations.

This evening's ceremony, emceed by cookbook author and Top Chef host Gail Simmons, honored outstanding achievements across food media, including cookbooks, journalism, podcasts and broadcast storytelling, while the highly anticipated Restaurant and Chef Awards spotlighted the nation's top culinary talent during the awards weekend. Chicago will continue serving as host city for the James Beard Awards through 2028, underscoring its enduring influence on the national food scene.

The city has plenty to cheer for this year, with several local chefs and restaurants earning nominations and showcasing the creativity, innovation and diversity that define Chicago's dining landscape. From neighborhood favorites to nationally acclaimed establishments, the nominees reflected the city's remarkable culinary depth.

But, in the end, only one Chicago chef took home an award: Chicago's Jacob Potashnick of Feld captured the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes, giving the city a major win at the culinary industry's biggest night. 

For chefs and restaurateurs, receiving a James Beard Award can be career-defining, often leading to increased national recognition and drawing diners from across the country. For Chicago, hosting the celebration reinforces its standing as a world-class food destination where innovation and tradition thrive side by side.

Whether it's fine dining, neighborhood gems or groundbreaking culinary storytelling, the James Beard Awards shine a spotlight on the people who shape how America eats. As the night's winners were announced, Chicago's vibrant restaurant community had much to celebrate.
