Chicago could once again take center stage in American politics. The Democratic National Committee has named Chicago a front-runner to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention, with the city also under consideration for 2032. The announcement follows what leaders describe as the overwhelming success of the 2024 DNC at the United Center.

A Strong Track Record

According to the Chicago Bid Committee, the city’s experience hosting large-scale global events makes it well prepared for another convention. In a statement, organizers pointed to Chicago’s “vibrant and diverse culture” and its ability to deliver a safe and energetic event.

Chicago has hosted the Democratic convention a record 11 times. If selected again in 2028, it would mark the first time since New York in the 1970s that a city hosted back-to-back conventions.

Big Economic Impact

The numbers from 2024 tell a powerful story.

The last convention generated a record-breaking $371.4 million in economic impact and brought roughly 50,000 visitors to the city. Federal funds tied to the event helped fast-track improvements like a new CTA Green Line station near Damen and the United Center.

The Chicago 2024 Host Committee also invested more than $3 million back into local nonprofits and philanthropic causes. Organizers raised $97 million and finished the event debt-free.

Political Backing

State and city leaders have thrown their support behind another bid.

Officials in Gov. JB Pritzker’s office and Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office formed a working team earlier this year to explore the opportunity. Formal bids were submitted in January after the DNC invited Chicago to apply for both 2028 and 2032.

Other finalist cities include Atlanta, Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia. Democratic Party leaders are expected to visit each location this spring before making a final decision.

Not Without Challenges

While many praised the 2024 convention, not all feedback was glowing. Some downtown businesses reported lighter-than-expected traffic. Others pointed to security zones, protests and traffic disruptions that affected daily life.

Still, supporters argue the benefits outweigh the inconvenience — and that Chicago once again proved it can handle the national spotlight.

As the DNC weighs its options, Chicago leaders are making their case clear: the team that delivered a record-setting convention is ready to do it again.
