Some movies entertain. Others transport you. Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey does both, and then some.
Leave it to Nolan to take a story that's been around for nearly 3,000 years and make it feel fresh, thrilling and surprisingly emotional. This isn't just another sword-and-sandals epic. It's a sweeping adventure with heart, stunning visuals and enough edge-of-your-seat moments to remind you why we still love going to the movies.

Matt Damon was an inspired choice for Odysseus. He's easy to root for from the very beginning, bringing just the right mix of intelligence, grit, vulnerability and determination to a hero who refuses to give up despite impossible odds. Whether facing mythical creatures, raging seas or the wrath of the gods, Damon's performance keeps you invested every step of the way. His journey isn't just about getting home. It's about rediscovering who he is after years of unimaginable trials.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, but this is very much Damon's movie, and he carries it with confidence and quiet strength.

What I appreciated most is that Nolan never lets the spectacle overwhelm the story. Yes, there are jaw-dropping battles, astonishing visual effects and mythical creatures brought vividly to life, but the emotional core always remains front and center. At its heart, The Odyssey is about resilience, loyalty, family and the universal desire to find your way home.
And speaking of visuals, this is not a movie to watch on a small screen. Treat yourself and see it the way Nolan intended. My top picks are Cinemark at Seven Bridges and IMAX in Woodridge, AMC DINE-IN Block 37, which features IMAX with Laser, or, if you prefer a more nostalgic moviegoing experience, Chicago's beloved Music Box Theatre, where the grandeur of the setting perfectly complements the grandeur on screen.
I've always believed the best movies make you lose track of time, and this one certainly did. Nearly three hours flew by as we became completely immersed in Nolan's remarkable vision. It's the kind of film that reminds us why theaters still matter and why shared cinematic experiences can be so magical.
This is storytelling on an epic scale, crafted by a director at the top of his game. Don't wait to stream this one. See it on the biggest screen you can find.
My verdict? An unforgettable cinematic journey and one of the year's best films.
