Equality Illinois brought together more than 1,500 community leaders, advocates, elected officials, and allies for its annual gala in Chicago, celebrating progress in LGBTQ+ rights while underscoring the ongoing work needed to defend equality across Illinois and the broader Midwest. The event honored longtime community leader Dave Bentlin with the Freedom Award for his decades of service advancing LGBTQ+ rights in Central Illinois and elevating downstate voices in statewide advocacy efforts.
The organization also presented its Organization Award to Lambda Legal in recognition of its more than fifty years of landmark legal advocacy on behalf of LGBTQ+ people and those living with HIV, reaffirming the essential role of legal action in protecting civil rights amid rising challenges.

A poignant moment during the evening was a tribute and moment of silence in honor of Rick Garcia, co-founder of Equality Illinois and a pioneering figure in LGBTQ+ activism whose work helped shape the fight for equality in Illinois and nationally. Garcia’s legacy was remembered as a reminder of both how far the movement has come and the importance of continuing the struggle for justice.
Speakers at the gala reaffirmed Equality Illinois’ commitment to advancing policy, advocacy, and civic engagement statewide, noting that the event’s fundraising supports efforts to ensure LGBTQ+ people in Illinois can live openly, safely and with dignity.
