Greektown is all lit up and ready for the holidays

Greektown Chicago is brimming with holiday cheer this season. Blue and white lights, a nod to the Greek flag, line Halsted Street, casting a festive glow over the neighborhood. The season officially began on Sunday, November 23, when the community gathered at Elysian Field (at Halsted & Van Buren) for Greektown’s 10th annual Christmas tree lighting.

At the event, families mingled with Santa and friends while students from Chicagoland Greek schools sang kalanda, traditional Greek Christmas carols. At exactly 5 p.m., the tree was lit in vibrant blue and white lights, adorned with karavákia (boat‑shaped) ornaments by artist Panos Fiorentios. Afterwards, guests enjoyed hot chocolate and loukoumades under cozy tents.

At the same time, Greektown unveiled its holiday Karavákia display: more than 35 artist-painted miniature boats now decorate storefronts throughout the area, honoring a beloved Greek tradition. A larger karaváki, painted by James Mesple, stands near the monument at Elysian Field as a striking visual centerpiece.

This year’s holiday programming is organized by Greektown SSA #16, with support from Alderman Bill Conway (34th Ward), the Greektown Chamber of Commerce, and the Chicago Greektown Educational Foundation.

The lights and boat art will be on display through January 6, 2026. Whether you’re planning a festive stroll, a special dinner, or just want to take in a different kind of holiday magic, Greektown’s charm is fully alive this season.
