The search for the next Columbus Day Queen brought elegance, tradition and plenty of excitement to the Des Plaines Theatre on July 29, as the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans (JCCIA) hosted its annual Columbus Day Queen Pageant.

Hosted by Ron Onesti, the evening celebrated Italian heritage and the accomplishments of 17 talented contestants who competed for the coveted title. The contestants were judged on poise, personality and an evening gown presentation, showcasing their confidence, charm and connection to their heritage.
Ron Onesti, founder Onesti Entertainment and owner Des Plaines Theatre, served as emcee.
A distinguished panel of judges included ABC 7’s Jason Knowles, actor Guy Nardulli, entrepreneur Joe Perillo, Roseanne Sorrentino, former Columbus Day Queen Deneen Spignoli and this author.

The evening culminated with the crowning of Gabriella Gariti as the 2026 Columbus Day Queen. During her official walk, Gariti was escorted by Nico Hartman and Giancarlo Schoene as “One Moment in Time” played, creating a memorable finale to the celebration.
Pageant Chairwoman Rose Mary Ranallo, president of the JCCIA Women’s Board, shared remarks during the evening, highlighting the importance of continuing traditions that celebrate Italian American culture and community.
The Columbus Day Queen Pageant remains one of the JCCIA’s signature events, honoring young women while preserving the legacy and spirit of Italian American pride in Chicago.
