Think Venetian Night is only for yacht owners? Think again. One of Chicago's most colorful fall traditions returns to the Chicago Riverwalk on Saturday, Sept. 12, and this year it's easier than ever to experience the magic from the water, even if you don't own a boat.

The Italian American Human Relations Foundation (IAHRF) has partnered with Chicago Boat Company to offer rental boats, complete with licensed operators, so anyone can join the illuminated parade through the heart of downtown. Guests can bring up to six passengers aboard a rented Duffy, Luxury Duffy or Pontoon boat, making it a unique way to celebrate with family and friends. Boat assignments will be based on availability. Due to U.S. Coast Guard regulations, each vessel is limited to six passengers regardless of its size. (Cost is around $1200)

The evening transforms the Chicago River into a floating celebration inspired by Venice's famous canals. As darkness falls, boats decorated with dazzling lights and imaginative themes cruise along the river while spectators line the Riverwalk to enjoy the spectacle.
Those entering decorated boats can compete for cash prizes, with judges scoring entries on theme, creativity, illumination, public appeal and team spirit. Winners will receive $2,000 for first place, $1,500 for second and $1,000 for third.
The parade is expected to depart Marina City around 7:30 p.m., traveling west to Wolf Point before turning east toward the Lake Shore Drive bridge, then returning to Marina City. Organizers estimate the procession will last between one and one-and-a-half hours.
Even if you prefer to stay on land, Venetian Night offers plenty to enjoy. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. along the Riverwalk with strolling musicians, live entertainment, Venetian costumes and waterfront dining, creating a festive atmosphere before the illuminated boat parade begins. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or enjoy dinner at one of the many Riverwalk restaurants while taking in the sights and sounds. (IAHRF)
