Chicago Bears legend Charles “Peanut” Tillman will take center stage in one of the city’s most cherished holiday traditions when he serves as Grand Marshal of the 92nd Chicago Thanksgiving Parade on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, Nov. 26.

The annual celebration returns to State Street with giant balloons, marching bands, festive floats, equestrian units and live performances. But there are some exciting changes this year, including an earlier start time and new additions to the parade lineup.

• The Joffrey Ballet opens season with Chicago premiere of ‘Liliom’

Tillman, a fan favorite known for his standout career with the Bears and his trademark ability to force turnovers, is a fitting choice to lead the festivities. During his 12 seasons in Chicago, he became one of the NFL’s most memorable defensive players and a beloved figure among Bears fans.

Known affectionately as “Peanut,” Tillman has also made a lasting impact through his philanthropic work and community involvement, bringing an extra dose of hometown pride to his role as Grand Marshal.

What’s new this year?

For starters, parade-goers will need to set their alarms a little earlier. The procession will step off at 7:45 a.m., about an hour earlier than in previous years, giving fans time to enjoy the festivities before the Chicago Bears face the Detroit Lions at noon on Thanksgiving Day.

There will be new sights in the sky, too. Cookie Monster will make his debut as a giant helium balloon, joining returning favorites and other larger-than-life characters. And Santa Claus, who traditionally closes the parade, will arrive in a brand-new sleigh to give the grand finale a fresh holiday look.

Another special guest joining the celebration is Jake Connelly, the Arlington Heights native who plays Derek Turnbow in the hit series Stranger Things. His appearance adds a local connection for fans of the popular show.

The parade will travel north along State Street from Ida B. Wells Drive to Randolph Street, filling the Loop with holiday excitement. Admission along the public viewing route is free, and spectators can also watch the festivities on CBS Chicago from 8 to 10 a.m.

Now in its 92nd year, the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade remains a beloved kickoff to the holiday season, bringing generations of Chicagoans together for a morning of entertainment, tradition and hometown pride. With Tillman leading the way, Cookie Monster making his debut and Santa sporting a new ride, this year’s celebration promises plenty of reasons to bundle up and head downtown.
