In New York’s UBS Arena, the MTV Video Music Awards unfolded on Sept. 7 with the kind of energy that makes the music world buzz. Among the constellation of superstars, Chicago’s own Chance the Rapper quietly delivered his own moment, bringing Windy City swagger to the red carpet in a way that felt refreshingly authentic.

Though fellow headliners grabbed award headlines, Chance’s arrival wasn’t about scoring Moon People, it was about symbolic presence. Some critics felt his outfit “missed the mark” on flash, but there was no mistaking that laid-back, genuine Chicago cool. And just before the event, he dropped by Windy City Weekend to dish on forthcoming music and tour plans, a homegrown reminder of what makes him resonate.

Lady Gaga dominated the night, scoring Artist of the Year among four total wins. Ariana Grande snagged both Video of the Year and Best Pop Video for “Brighter Days Ahead.” Rosé made history by becoming the first K-pop artist to win Song of the Year for “Apt.” with Bruno Mars.

The evening also celebrated legacy and rising talent: Alex Warren earned Best New Artist, Sabrina Carpenter hauled in Album of the Year plus Best Pop Artist, Mariah Carey received the Video Vanguard Award and Busta Rhymes was honored with the inaugural Rock the Bells Visionary Award.

Though Chance didn’t leave with a trophy, his presence mattered for representing Chicago’s spirit, versatility and heart, even amid the glitz and glam.
