Mayor Brandon Johnson's office has announced the next phase of the O'Hare modernization project, releasing designs for the new Satellite Concourse 1. The new concourse is a part of the broader O'Hare 21 initiative which aims to transform the airport into a global travel hub fit for the demands of the modern world.

According to a statement from the Mayor's office, the concourse will cater to international and domestic travelers and is part of a larger plan that features additional concourses, the new O'Hare Global Terminal, and an underground tunnel to connect the facilities.

Renderings released by the city display a distinctive design spearheaded by renowned local architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) with Ross Barney Architects, Juan Gabriel Moreno Architects (JGMA), and Arup.

Satellite Concourse 1 will introduce 19 new gates and feature a design that can comfortably accommodate various aircraft sizes, enhancing efficiency for airlines and minimizing layover transfers for flyers at one of the nation's busiest airports.

Construction on the Satellite Concourse 1 project commenced in March 2023 and is projected to be finalized in 2028, according to the city. The project, along with other infrastructure developments, is expected to generate over 3,800 construction jobs.

Chicago's airports are essential to the country's aviation system and the local economy, affecting over 700,000 jobs in the region and contributing more than $70 billion in economic activity. The O'Hare 21 Terminal Area Plan's investments are anticipated to create new career opportunities and significantly boost the local economy.
