On Thursday, Mayor Brandon Johnson and the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) announced O’Hare International Airport has been granted an additional $40 million in Airport Terminal Program funding through the national Bipartisan Infrastructure Plan.

Along with a $50 million grant awarded in 2023, the funds will be allocated towards upgrading customer amenities, improving security, and expanding accessibility at O’Hare’s Terminal 3.

According to a statement from the city, the grant is the largest of its kind; and 2024 marks the second consecutive year that O’Hare has received this award.

“O’Hare is critical to the infrastructure of the entire Chicago region, supporting tens of thousands of jobs and keeping the greatest city in the world connected to every corner of it,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said.

“Thanks to the support of the Biden-Harris Administration and members of Illinois’ Congressional delegation, this grant will complement the CDA’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand O’Hare to serve the evolving needs of the traveling public for decades to come.”

The approximately $200 million Terminal 3 renovation is a part of the broader O’Hare 21 project, a sprawling multi-year modernization plan for the airport. Construction on Terminal 3 will reportedly begin this spring, lasting for an estimated three years and ending in the summer of 2027.
