On Thursday, July 13, packaged food titan Kraft-Heinz released a statement detailing plans to establish a $400 million distribution center in DeKalb, Illinois. Slated to open in 2025, the plant will utilize cutting-edge automation and generate more than 150 permanent local jobs.
Kraft Heinz stated the planned 775,000 square-foot distribution center will support supply chain efficiency, with features like automated technology and nationwide railroad connections that will allow products to reach customers quickly and efficiently.
“We’re driving end-to-end transformation across our entire supply chain, investing in automated technology and digitized solutions to increase the agility of our logistics operations,” said Erin Mitchell, Vice President of Logistics at Kraft Heinz, according to the company statement.
The facility will also feature automated storage systems with the capacity to produce more than 60 percent of Kraft Heinz’s foodservice business, according to the company’s statement. The distribution center will also impact the company’s broader ESG ambitions by employing sustainable technologies and waste disposal solutions.
Kraft Heinz has partnered with Oak Brook-based contractor Krusinski Construction Company to develop the facility at the ChicagoWest Business Center, located along Interstate 88 just outside of Dekalb. The complex is also home to centers for Amazon, Meta, and Ferrara Candy.
According to Kraft Heinz’s statement, DeKalb mayor Cohen Barnes expressed his approval over the development, stating, “We are very excited that Kraft Heinz will bring its worldwide reputation for quality products and services to our community.”
