Chicago’s Holiday Tree Recycling program offers sustainable Christmas tree disposal

Chicago residents looking to dispose of their natural Christmas tree following the holiday season have an eco-friendly option with the city’s annual Holiday Tree Recycling program. Residents can drop their tree off for recycling at 27 locations throughout the city from Jan. 6 to 20.

The program allows for an environmentally friendly way to dispose of your Christmas tree while providing a valuable resource for local parks and gardens. Once collected, the trees will be turned into mulch, which will be available for free at certain locations on a first-come, first-served basis. Nine of the 27 locations will offer free mulch starting Jan. 8, according to the city.

To participate in the program, ensure that your tree is a natural tree – artificial trees will not be accepted. Before dropping off your tree, remove all lights, ornaments, and garland. A complete list of drop-off locations can be found by visiting the City of Chicago’s official site.

Chicago's Christmas tree recycling program gives residents a sustainable way to dispose of their trees after the holiday season and supports local parks and gardens with the resulting mulch. As the New Year begins, take the opportunity to recycle your tree and help our city stay green.
