How Chicago is preparing to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention

Chicago is set to host the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in 2024 from August 19-22, bringing thousands of political and media personnel together for the re-nomination of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Preparations are already underway for the 4-day event. The DNC host committee has begun accepting volunteer applications for the convention and a media welcoming event is planned for later this month.

The selection signifies the Midwest's importance as a key battleground in the upcoming election. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) stated, "The Midwest is key to a victory in 2024, and there is no city better positioned to reach those voters than Chicago."

“The Midwest reflects America and will give Democrats an opportunity to showcase some of President Biden and Vice President Harris’s most significant accomplishments for American families."

The convention will take place at the United Center and McCormick Place. Jerry Reinsdorf and Rocky Wirtz, Co-Chairs of the United Center Joint Venture, said, "Chicago provides the best stage for the Democratic National Committee to tell its story."

The Democratic National Convention will highlight Chicago’s world-class amenities and commitment to labor while bringing valuable tourism to the area during the post-pandemic recovery. Lynn Osmond, President & CEO of Choose Chicago, said, "We can’t wait for delegates from across our country to enjoy the amazing restaurants, hotels, museums, festivals, and beaches that draw millions to our city every year.”

What’s ahead

On January 18, 2024, over 500 representatives from media outlets will arrive in Chicago for a logistics tour of the United Center, according to The Chicago Sun-Times. The tour will allow media organizations to receive detailed information about the logistics for convention coverage. About 15,000 media members will attend the event.

The DNCC will work with three hotels — the Hyatt Regency Chicago, the Marriott Marquis Chicago, and the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place — to provide convention rates for media representatives. Depending on the success of the logistics tour, a media welcome reception may be held on the evening of January 17, 2024.

National conventions can be pricey, with estimates for the DNC ranging between $80-100 million. However, Governor JB Pritzker has assured that Chicago is up to the challenge of fundraising and covering the costs with the support of labor unions and the business community.
