Cook County Health CEO steps down

Israel Rocha Jr., the CEO of Cook County Health, is set to leave his position in December to pursue a new professional opportunity, according to Crain’s. Rocha, 46, has served as CEO of the public health system since December 2020. His last day will be December 1st.

Following the news of Rocha's departure, the board of directors has reportedly chosen Dr. Erik Mikaitis, the health system's chief quality officer, as interim CEO. This decision comes as the organization conducts a nationwide search for a permanent leader

Dr. Mikaitis will take over the role on December 1st, following Rocha's departure. During his time as interim CEO, Dr. Mikaitis will be responsible for maintaining the quality of care provided by Cook County Health, overseeing its operations, and ensuring a smooth transition for the new permanent CEO when they are appointed.

As the chief quality officer, Dr. Mikaitis has played a crucial role in improving the health system’s overall performance and patient outcomes. Cook County Health's board of directors is confident in his ability to lead the organization during this transitional period.

“Serving as Cook County Health’s CEO has truly been a privilege,” Rocha said in a statement according to Crain’s. “...I have every confidence that the incredible team that comprises CCH will continue to carry on the powerful work of the health system and lead it into a bright future.”

Cook County Health is reportedly the third largest health system in the Chicago area, operating Stroger Hospital and employing more than 5,000 people. Rocha’s departure as CEO comes at a time when Cook County Health’s Medicaid program CountyCare is projected to drop in the 2024 fiscal year.
