A law allowing Illinois restaurants and bars to serve to-go cocktails was extended last month, after Governor J.B. Pritzker approved an extension allowing the sale of to-go alcohol for another five years.

To-go alcohol sales were first approved by the state in June 2020 to support struggling bars and restaurants during the pandemic. The law was set to expire in early 2023, and has since been extended until August of 2028.

The law comes with a set of stipulations. To-go beverages must be delivered by persons over the legal drinking age of 21, and customers must be able to verify their age before purchase. Third-party delivery apps like Doordash and Grubhub are prohibited from distributing to-go alcohol.

Additionally, all drinks must be served in sealed containers labeled with the drink’s ingredients. Drivers picking up alcohol must store the to-go drinks in the trunk of their car.

In a statement, Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC)  Executive Director Lisa Gardner voiced approval for the law, stating “We are happy that the Illinois hospitality industry can continue to receive the economic benefits of cocktails to-go.” (Chicago Tribune) Gardner added that the ILCC intends to ensure that consumers and retailers comply with the law and its restrictions.
