A new Metra station in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood finally opened on Monday, following a decade of development. Located at Peterson and Ridge avenues along Metra's UP North line, the station is set to provide better connectivity to the area, bridging a gap between the Rogers Park and Ravenswood stops.
According to a statement from Metra, four trains have been added to the UP North Line in addition to the new station, to create a more consistent schedule and alleviate crowds during peak service hours. “We continue to monitor customer feedback and this new schedule shows that we are listening,” said Metra CEO/Executive Director Jim Derwinski in a statement. “...The grand opening of our new station at Peterson/Ridge also provides another much-needed access point to our service.”
The Peterson-Ridge station was first announced in 2012 but faced delays due to budget shortages and issues obtaining permits from the city. Funding for the project was secured in 2019, and officials broke ground on the site in fall of 2021.
The new $15 million station includes on-site parking, a cul-de-sac drop offs and pick ups, warming stations, and an enclosed waiting area on the Downtown-bound side, according to Block Club. The new station marks a win for the Edgewater community and commuters along the UP North line, improving transit options in Chicago and expanding service for all.
