Novak Djokovic loses in five sets to 19-year-old Joao Fonseca at French Open

Novak Djokovic’s tennis run at Roland Garros ended with a shock loss to 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who rallied after dropping the first two sets to win the match in five, according to Yahoo Sports. Djokovic had led 2-0 before Fonseca turned the match around, CNN reported, taking the next three sets to complete the upset on the Paris clay.

The final score was 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. According to CNN, Fonseca’s comeback denied Djokovic a chance to keep chasing a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.

A changing men’s tennis draw in Paris

The loss also reshaped the men’s tournament picture. With Carlos Alcaraz absent and Jannik Sinner already out after an earlier surprise defeat, Djokovic’s exit means the men’s singles draw will produce a first-time Grand Slam champion, CNN says.

According to Yahoo News, Djokovic, 39, started fast and controlled the opening stages, but Fonseca kept extending points and forcing mistakes as the match wore on. After Djokovic won the first two sets 6-4, 6-4, Fonseca answered with a 6-3 third set and a 7-5 fourth set to level the match. In the fifth, Fonseca stayed steady in the late games and closed out the biggest win of his career.

The result marked another major turn in a men’s draw that has already lost several of its biggest names.
