Spirit Airlines halted all flights Saturday, ending 34 years of budget airline service. The carrier posted signs at airports like LaGuardia Terminal A stating operations had ceased globally, according to CNN. Travelers found nine flights to Texas, Florida and other states marked canceled on departure boards.
Thousands of passengers now scramble for options after the sudden Spirit Airlines shutdown. The airline issued refunds but stopped customer service. Its website warned, CNBC confirmed: "To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available."
According to CNN, this is the first time a major U.S. airline will shutdown from bankruptcy in 25 years.
Financial woes seal fate
Bondholders rejected a last-minute $500 million bailout from the Trump administration. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed CEO Dave Davis no deal was possible, said a person familiar with the matter, as reported by CNN. Spirit entered its second bankruptcy without a rescue.
The pioneering low-cost carrier profited in the 2010s but struggled since 2019, CNBC noted. Competition from Delta, United and American grew fierce, alongside rising jet fuel costs from the Iran war. A failed JetBlue acquisition and engine issues added pressure.
Rival airlines and government step in
Frontier, Southwest, American, United, JetBlue and Delta offered rescue fares around $200 to rebook stranded fliers, CNN said. United reported 14,000 Spirit customers booking on Saturday, per CNBC. These carriers also opened job portals for laid-off Spirit staff.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the government coordinates relief, including travel perks and hiring pipelines. "Most major U.S. carriers are extending travel pass benefits and spare jump seats to Spirit pilots, flight attendants, and other employees who need to return home," a Department of Transportation press release stated.

Pilot Brandon Keene, who joined in 2023, received an email from the chief pilot on Friday evening and the CEO at 1:16 a.m. Saturday, announcing the close, he told CNN’s Brian Abel.
The Association of Flight Attendants messaged crew, per CNN: “We are delivering the hardest news of our lives that Spirit will cease operations at 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time on May 2, 2026.” Union president Sara Nelson urged federal aid for pay and unemployment supplements.
Air Line Pilots Association's Jason Ambrosi wrote, according to CNBC: "The pain of this decision will not be felt in boardrooms. It will be felt by pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, dispatchers, and ground crews, and by the families and communities that depend on them."
Spirit held 4% U.S. market share but loomed large in public view. Its final flight, No. 1833 from Detroit to Dallas, said CNBC, landed just after midnight Saturday.
