T Mobile and AT&T have decided to part ways with their flagship stores along Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The phone providers are the latest in an ongoing trend of retailers shuttering their doors along the stretch of Michigan Avenue.
T-Mobile has already closed its 700 N. Michigan Avenue location, with plans to open a new store in Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood on June 23. AT&T will close its storefront at 600 N. Michigan Avenue on August 1. (Crain’s)
In a statement to NBC Chicago, AT&T attributed the decision to the changing retail landscape. “Consumer shopping habits continue to change, and we’re changing with them,” said a spokesperson for the company.
In the years since the start of the pandemic, other major retailers have vacated the Mag Mile, including Gap, Macy’s and Banana Republic.
T Mobile and AT&T’s exit has increased the vacancy rate along the Mag Mile to 30%, a sizable hike from the 2021 vacancy rate of 19%. (NBC)
