August Doorperson of the Month Larry Hermann, St. Regis Residences, 363 E. Wacker Dr. 1

Larry Hermann

Larry Hermann is a natural-born caregiver because he is the second oldest of 11 siblings. He’s excellently looking after the residents at St. Regis and is “so honored to be nominated for Doorperson of the Month.”

Larry’s caregiving nature began early in life. “Our house was the place to be growing up because there was always one of us that could play.” Larry looked after his siblings and the neighbor kids in Evansville, IN, and he proudly shares a vintage picture of his large family.

Larry started at the St. Regis in November 2020 as an “ambassador” for the front desk. “I started with midnights but was soon promoted to days because I was told I was personable.” Although the package room is independent, the front desk ambassadors, as they call them, are always busy delivering groceries and food right to residents’ front doors.

“My success is because of the entire team here, including housekeeping and maintenance.” Larry tells how residents refer to him and his co-ambassador as the “A Team.” He cites his perfect attendance record and being on time as strengths, “I owe my work ethic to my parents.”

A group of award-winning female architects created the St. Regis Chicago in the Lakeshore East neighborhood. St. Regis is home to Miru, a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, and boasts of a signature cocktail, “The 1871 Bloody Mary,” featuring smoked bourbon. The St. Regis Spa is the first in Chicago with a five-star rating.

St. Regis

The St. Regis experienced many pandemic-related delays. “Finally, the St. Regis hotel opened in May of this year, but the residents have been enjoying the shared amenities since the St. Regis Residences were complete in 2020,” coinciding with the pandemic.

Larry is proud of St. Regis, and the tour begins with showcasing the pool and terrace overlooking Navy Pier. There’s a bistro with fresh pastries in the morning, and spaces to rent, including a demonstration kitchen, a drawing room, simulated golf, and a movie theater.

Larry pauses as a butler waves hello to him on the 47th floor, the resident amenity floor, and a gentleman asks Larry about a copy of  The Wall Street Journal. The tour concludes with the beautiful banquet rooms complete with state-of-the-art media.

Larry takes photos of nature in his spare time and creates “magnet postcards.” He takes a particular interest in butterflies and teaches the kids at St. Regis about the migration of monarch butterflies. The kids show their appreciation by creating artwork for Larry.

Larry enjoys living downtown, renting a Divvy, riding his bike, or walking to work. He has two pet Chihuahuas named Pigsley and Pop. Larry is a caregiver to people and animals. The residents of the St. Regis are undoubtedly lucky to have Larry caring for them.
