Chicago’s skyline is set for a dramatic transformation as the former Signature Room atop the iconic 875 North Michigan Avenue—formerly known as the John Hancock Center—will soon become the city’s first multi-story observation deck and a premier private event venue, reports Axios. According to the report, this ambitious redevelopment is spearheaded by Magnicity, the French company behind the 360 Chicago observation deck, which already operates on the building’s 94th floor.

The Signature Room, a beloved fine dining destination that graced the 95th and 96th floors for three decades, abruptly closed its doors in September 2023, citing financial hardship. Since then, the space has remained vacant, but plans unveiled this week promise to breathe new life into these storied floors.

According to Block Club Chicago, Magnicity acquired the two upper floors last year and is investing tens of millions of dollars to create a three-story atrium and a 14,000-square-foot event space. The report goes on to say that the 95th floor will expand the existing 360 Chicago observation deck to two stories, while the 96th floor will be dedicated primarily to private events such as weddings, corporate gatherings, and social celebrations.

All three levels—the 94th, 95th, and 96th floors—will be seamlessly connected by a bespoke grand staircase, forming what managing director Nichole Benolken describes in Block Club’s report as “one spectacular and cohesive space.” The project, which is expected to open to the public in the next 18–24 months, is being designed in partnership with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the original architects of the Hancock building, and WB Immersive, a global firm known for high-profile installations and ceremonies, Block Club says.

As reported by Axios, the expanded observation deck will cover more than 30,000 square feet, making it one of only a handful of multi-story observation decks worldwide. The transformation aims to preserve the spirit of the Signature Room as a destination for special occasions, with Benolken noting in Axios that hundreds of engagements and celebrations take place in the building each year. The new event venue is positioned to redefine iconic Chicago gatherings, offering unparalleled city and lake views.

While specific details about the immersive experiences planned for the new observation deck remain under wraps, the redevelopment marks a significant investment in one of Chicago’s most recognizable landmarks. The project not only honors the building’s architectural legacy but also promises to set a new standard for sky-high experiences in the city.
