I have to admit that when it first opened back in 2018 as the newest (at the time, anyways) member of the growing Chicago Riverwalk restaurant and bar scene, I had my doubts.
The strange-looking orange tables, the expansive space, and the European Beer Garden concept right here on the Riverwalk? "Not so sure they are going to make it," I said to more than a few people at the time.
Fast forward about seven years… and, well, I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The Northman Beer and Cider Garden is one of the big “hits” amongst the Riverwalk brethren. Has been for a few years actually. Always crowded, always buzzing, with a huge space for seating which, more often than not, is pretty filled up.
The Northman has perfect views of the river and all the people passing by, in addition to a unique and varied food and drink selection, all becoming a part of the draw to this east end location.
The above factors aside, what seems to really bring people to The Northman is the camaraderie and socializing. It has become a very popular post-work meeting place for many, including friends getting together, work parties, sports teams, and their pre- and post-game celebrations, and even a few engagement and wedding groups.
Put it all together, and you come up with a consistently energized and fun atmosphere. But never too loud or crowded, it should be noted, because of the aforementioned huge footprint that the Northman has. The tables are well spread out, and you never feel like you are boxed in.
Seating choices abound. You can pick out a covered table area with a stage for music to the east end, or a spacious seating area directly west of that (featuring the aforementioned orange tables), and then another large grouping of tables closer to the actual Chicago River.
Take your pick, and despite the crowd, there is always seating available.
The food and drink selection is unique. The draft beer list includes such favorites as “The Phase 3 Broad Tail,” “The Begyle Blonde,” “ Surly Furious,” “Maplewood Son of Juice,” “Dovetail Vienna Lager,” “O.L.B Cushy Fruited Sour Ale,” and “Stiegl Pils,” just to name a few. A full selection of tasty ciders is available as well.
For food, hot dogs, bratwurst, sausage, hot pretzels, and tater tots are amongst the most popular of the group. Underrated (and a personal favorite) is the Northman Pub Mix, a really addictive snack mix blend of Gardettos, Cheez-its, and Chex—all topped with a special cheddar spice mix.
All told, the Northman Beer and Cider Garden is still going strong and seems headed for another great summer on the Windy City’s Riverfront.
And to think there were doubters when it first opened!
