Anthropic, a leading artificial intelligence startup, has become the first pure AI company to join Frontier, a carbon removal coalition backed by major tech firms including Stripe, Google, and Shopify. According to Crypto Rank, the company's membership contributes to a new $915 million tranche of funding that nearly doubles Frontier's total pledges to $1.8 billion.

This move marks Anthropic's first climate-related agreement, signaling a potential shift in how AI companies address their growing environmental footprint as the sector faces increasing scrutiny over energy consumption.

Future of carbon removal markets

Frontier has already contracted nearly $700 million across more than 50 projects, removing 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide, Crypto Rank confirmed. The organization is now shifting to eight-to-ten-year contracts with higher scrutiny, targeting projects capable of scaling to remove one gigaton of CO2 annually.

New contracts require partners to show a path to government subsidy, as Frontier expects public funding to eventually replace private pledges by 2040, Crypto Rank added. Technologies supported include direct air capture, enhanced rock weathering, and ocean alkalinity.

Hannah Bebbington Valori, head of Frontier, said, "The question today in carbon removal is whether demand will keep pace with that technology development and will demand scale to the size that the world needs,” per the Wall Street Journal.

Joachim Katchinoff, co-founder of Crew Carbon, noted in the Wall Street Journal’s report, "We are showing that carbon removals can happen and can happen quickly".

Anthropic's entry may encourage other AI startups to follow, though the industry's overall energy consumption remains a significant challenge.
