Cloudy with a chance of speed: Amazon and Google Cloud link up for multicloud boost

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud have launched a new multicloud networking service, according to a press release by Google. This joint solution allows customers to set up private, high-speed connections between the two platforms in minutes, not weeks, the report says. The service is designed to meet growing demand for reliable cloud connectivity, especially as businesses rely more on digital infrastructure.

“This collaboration between AWS and Google Cloud represents a fundamental shift in multicloud connectivity,” Robert Kennedy, vice president of network services at AWS, stated in the press release. The new offering combines AWS Interconnect–multicloud with Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect. This makes it easier for companies to move data and applications between clouds, according to Rob Enns, vice president and general manager of cloud networking at Google Cloud.

Why businesses need multicloud solutions

Historically, connecting different cloud environments was complex and time-consuming. Customers had to manually set up physical connections, which could take weeks or months, the press release confirms. The new service removes much of this complexity. It uses automation and cloud-native tools, so businesses can provision bandwidth on demand and establish connectivity quickly.

Salesforce is among the first companies to use the new approach, reports Reuters. “Integrating Salesforce Data 360 with the broader IT landscape requires robust, private connectivity,” said Jim Ostrognai, SVP of software engineering at Salesforce, in Google’s press release. “AWS Interconnect–multicloud allows us to establish these critical bridges to Google Cloud with the same ease as deploying internal AWS resources.”

According to the press release, the collaboration also introduces an open specification for network interoperability. This means other cloud providers can adopt the standard, making global connectivity simpler for everyone. The solution is built with reliability and security in mind, using quad-redundancy and MACsec encryption.

As organizations increasingly adopt multicloud architectures, the need for seamless interoperability has never been greater. This new service from Amazon and Google is a major step toward a more open and efficient cloud environment.
