Conservative leader James Dobson, who launched Focus on the Family, dies at 89

James Dobson, a prominent evangelical leader and conservative political influencer, passed away at the age of 89, as confirmed by the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute. Known for founding the influential ministry, Focus on the Family, Dobson significantly impacted American conservative politics and family advocacy.

According to the BBC, Dobson established Focus on the Family in 1977, advocating for traditional values in what he called "the God-ordained institution of the family." The ministry, which became one of the largest globally, reached nearly 100 countries and featured a radio program broadcast across 4,000 stations in North America, BBC reported. According to the publication, Dobson also penned over 70 books on parenting and family dynamics. His influence extended to high-level political advising, as he counseled Republican presidents, including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and current President Donald Trump.

“Dr. Dobson’s impact endures through the many lives he touched, the families he strengthened, and the unshakable faith he proclaimed,” said his family, according to CNN.

CNN also highlighted Dobson’s important interview with serial killer Ted Bundy the day before his execution; Dobson was a staunch critic of adult films, which his interview exposed as a driving force behind Bundy’s crimes.

Survived by his wife, Shirley, and children Danae and Ryan, Dobson's lasting legacy perseveres through his family and the countless individuals his work has touched.
