Mass flight cancellations and delays persisted on Monday, four days after the beginning of a worldwide IT outage that disrupted computerized operations across the globe. The outage resulted from a faulty Microsoft software update produced by cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike, according to reports.

CNN reported that over 970 US flights were canceled by midday Monday, and 4,200 were delayed, with a significant portion of the cancellations affecting Delta Airlines flights. The problem has also impacted other sectors, including hospitality, healthcare, education, and government functions.

The disruption is being labeled as the largest IT outage in history, with an estimated cost of over $1 billion, according to CNN. Reports indicate that the tech issue was caused by a software defect in a Microsoft update rather than a cyberattack or security incident.

According to CNN, Delta CEO Ed Bastian apologized to affected customers and announced that efforts are being made to restore normal operations. However, compensation for inconveniences and lost income due to flight cancellations has not been provided according to Delta's policy.

CrowdStrike, the company responsible for the IT outage, has reportedly implemented measures to address the issue. CEO George Kurtz released a statement apologizing to customers and stated that service has been restored to a large portion of the 8.5 million impacted devices, according to CNN.
