New Jersey hit with first statewide blizzard warning in 30 years as feet of snow cover state

A fierce blizzard is currently hitting New Jersey as it experiences the first statewide blizzard warning in 30 years, according to NJ.com. The winter storm started Sunday evening and has continued into Monday. It dropped nearly 2 feet of snow in spots, dubbed the Blizzard of '26 by CBS News. 

Some places in New Jersey and New York have gotten between 27 and 29 inches of snow, reports Weather.gov, which shows a tracker that allows people to view how much snow each location received. 

Other states have also imposed travel bans to aid plowing crews and protect drivers, including Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware. Heavy snow blanketed roads, making many impassable. Officials halted most traffic to let emergency teams work. Public transit also paused amid the winter storm.

New Jersey eases restrictions first

New Jersey's travel ban on most roads expired at noon Monday, CBS reported, though some commercial vehicle rules linger. The ban started at 9 p.m. Sunday, covering state, county and local roads except the Turnpike. Speed limits dropped to 35 mph on highways.

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management extended the restriction to noon for public safety, according to North Jersey. Exemptions covered first responders, utility workers, healthcare staff and essential deliveries. Violators face state penalties.

Transit resumes amid track checks

NJ Transit halted all bus, light rail and rail by evening Sunday, CBS noted. Service stayed out through Monday morning, but plans to resume as conditions allow.

Drivers can view snow-covered roads live via 511nj.org traffic cameras. Cameras show Route 287, Route 80, Garden State Parkway and more. Check before heading out as another 2-3 inches is expected today, a North Jersey articl reported.
