A record-breaking heat wave is affecting the Southwestern US, resulting in extremely high temperatures and endangering the health of millions of residents.

The heat dome has already caused several deaths and hospitalizations, and it is expected to persist through the weekend and extend up the West Coast, according to CNN. Heat warnings have been announced for over 18 million residents in California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, according to reports. Most of the warnings will be in effect until Friday, with some in high risk areas like Las Vegas extending into Saturday.

Numerous temperature records were shattered on Thursday, including 122°F in Death Valley, California, and 107°F in Fresno, matching a 121-year-old record, according to CNN.

The National Weather Service notes that extreme heat is the primary weather-related cause of death in the US. Factors including urban surroundings, population density, and construction materials can worsen the effects of extreme temperatures. High heat and humidity can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, all of which pose significant risks to human health.
