Metra reported a system wide outage on the Ventra app on Thursday morning, which continued into Friday. Commuters opening the app were met with an error message, according to CBS News.
The Ventra app reportedly began experiencing slowdowns for users around 6 a.m., and instructed Metra officials were instructed to shut it down and relaunch it. The app worked slowly for about an hour before stopping around 7 a.m. according to CBS.
While the app remained down, some customers were charged extra fees, but those charges were expected to disappear while still in pending status in their bank accounts.
If the charges go through, customers would need to request a refund from Metra. When asked if the app would be fixed by Friday, Metra could not guarantee a resolution by that time.
The technology issue comes as Metra is implementing a series of fare changes and ticketing adjustments, closing all of its ticket windows, including those in downtown locations.
As officials work to repair the Ventra app, riders can show their phones with the frozen screen in order to board Metra trains.
