One of the world’s best-known public art pieces is arriving in Milwaukee this weekend. The Historic Third Ward Moon Festival opens Friday, Aug. 7, at Catalano Square and centers on Museum of the Moon, a 23-foot illuminated sculpture by artist Luke Jerram made with NASA imagery.
The three-day event is part of the Historic Third Ward Association’s 50th anniversary celebration, according to the association and local event listings. The festival is free and open to the public, and it is the only Midwest stop on the installation’s international tour, the announcement confirms.

Art, music and neighborhood life
The festival runs Friday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m, and Sunday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to the Historic Third Ward website. Visitors can expect live music, interactive art, performances, family programming, wellness activities and food and drink throughout the neighborhood.
According to Urban Milwaukee, performers will include De La Buena, Mama Digdown’s Brass Band, Wisconsin Space Program, Milwaukee Ballet and Skylight Music Theatre.

Festival programming also includes cyanotype-making with artist Neto Atkinson, live painting, chalk art, a Moonlight & Mindfulness Market and extended hours at the Third Ward Beer Garden.
