On Wednesday, Google released an updated plan for its Thompson Center redevelopment project, including renderings of the company’s vision for the site. The tech corporation has committed to restoring the 40-year old building and converting the structure into office spaces by 2027.
Under Google’s leadership, the Loop office building will retain its iconic 17-story atrium while receiving a new glass facade and other enhanced features. The building’s lower colonnade will be redesigned, allowing more space for food and beverage retail. The renovations also will bring green space and terraces to Thompson Center’s surrounding plaza, with seating areas and spaces for seasonal outdoor events.

Google has set ambitious efficiency goals for the Thompson Center, like replacing its glass facade with sturdier paneling. The refurbished glass exterior will improve the internal temperature of the structure and require less energy to heat and cool.
In what Google is calling a ‘respectful design evolution’, the company plans to modernize the Thompson Center while maintaining the building’s integrity, staying true to its original postmodern design.
Google has a history of repurposing old buildings as a sustainable alternative to traditional building development. Redeveloping the Thompson Center rather than demolishing the structure will allow Google to honor Chicago’s rich history and architectural identity.
Google has stated it envisions the Thompson Center as a communal gathering space for its staff and the broader Chicago workforce. The renovation plan will bring updates to the Clark and Lake CTA stop, where all six train lines converge, creating improved accessibility to the Loop for all Chicagoans.
