According to the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Department of Buildings has approved a permit for demolition to begin on the James R. Thompson Center. The scheduled demolition comes as Google plans to move its Chicago offices to the building in the coming years.
The approved demolition will reportedly cost $6 million and encompass just one portion of the multi-phase project. The demolition will reportedly impact the Thompson Center’s iconic interior and glass facade.
The overarching goal of the renovation project is to modernize the nearly 40-year-old building, with larger glass panels, more greenery, and changes to the structure's color scheme. Renovations will also include added safety features, like much-needed insulation and other structural improvements.
The Thompson Center previously functioned as a state office building before being sold in 2022, according to the Tribune. Google has agreed to purchase the building after renovations are finished, reportedly by 2026.
