Workbox, a flexible workspace provider, is relocating its headquarters to Fulton Market, aiming to position itself amid what it describes as the city's new "center of gravity" for burgeoning businesses. Originally based at 20 N. Wabash, the company found itself running out of space as it expanded, according to Chicago Inno. Now, with a 65,000-square-foot lease at 220 N. Green St., a former WeWork location, Workbox plans to base its operations at the Fulton Market site moving forward.
John Wallace, co-founder and CEO of Workbox, emphasized the area's attraction for new and growth-stage companies alongside abundant tech talent, explaining the move as pivotal to drawing the demographic the company seeks to engage. The provider has expanded its footprint to encompass 10 locations nationwide, including six in Chicago alone.
"The amount of new company formations, the types of companies coming to Fulton Market and all of the tech talent in the neighborhood has created a center of gravity for new and growing companies,” Wallace told Chicago Inno.
Founded in 2019, the company has scaled from nine employees to 35 across the country, with plans to move around 20 employees to the new headquarters. Benefiting from a trend of returning to in-person work, despite a wider push from corporations like Amazon to boost office attendance, the coworking model appears increasingly relevant. Wallace noted that increased foot traffic downtown positively impacts the coworking space industry.
Workbox secured $17.5 million in Series A funding in June, fueling ambitions to double its number of sites over the next 18 months, while further elevating its staff numbers. Wallace expressed confidence in utilizing this momentum to grow its market presence and deliver services to more businesses aiming for agility in their workspace arrangements.
