Chicago adding 50 new speed cameras in 2025

Chicago will install 50 new speed cameras in 2025 as part of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s budget plan. The cameras will be placed in phases throughout the year, primarily in “Safety Zones” near schools and parks.

City officials say the initiative is intended to improve traffic safety in areas where children and families are present. At the same time, revenue from the cameras will help cover an $11 million gap in the Chicago Police Department’s staffing budget.

Each new camera will include a 30-day warning period before issuing fines. After that, drivers caught going 6 to 10 miles per hour over the speed limit will receive a $35 ticket, while those exceeding the limit by 11 miles per hour or more will face a $100 fine. Enforcement hours will vary depending on whether the camera is near a school or a park.

The new speed cameras are part of a wider set of surveillance-related measures taking shape across the city. The Chicago Transit Authority is expanding its gun-detection surveillance pilot by adding the technology to more train platform cameras, with completion expected by summer 2026. In addition, a City Council ordinance introduced in June 2025 would require certain businesses to install and maintain surveillance cameras.

Officials say these combined efforts reflect the city’s focus on traffic safety and public security through technology.
