In a dazzling evening at Lincoln Park Zoo, over 600 attendees gathered on Friday, July 11, to mark the 48th annual Zoo Ball, titled "Serpentine Soirée." The event—organized by the Women’s Board and co-chaired by Trish Giannoulias and Colleen Mansell—raised a record-breaking$1.8 million to further the zoo's commitment to animal care, welfare, and conservation initiatives, according to the zoo’s announcement.

This year's theme, inspired by the African rock python, emphasized the zoo's dedication to protecting reptiles and other wildlife threatened by trafficking. Guests enjoyed cocktails, a silent auction, and a raffle on the Main Mall before moving to various satellite dining locations for dinner. According to the press release, the décor, featuring motifs of snakeskin and florals, highlighted the striking beauty of the African rock python. After the meal, guests participated in a paddle raise program, returning later to the Main Mall for dessert and dancing.

Supporting conservation efforts

Zoo Ball not only funds animal welfare but also contributes to Lincoln Park Zoo’s mission to combat illegal wildlife trade. The African rock python is often poached from their native environment and sold internationally, the announcement stated, which further detailed how the snakes are bought on the black market by buyers who want them as pets or want their skin.

Philanthropic support from major donors and sponsors, including Abbott Laboratories, Northern Trust, and the TAWANI Foundation, underscored the community's commitment to the zoo's goals. Lincoln Park Zoo expressed gratitude towards Board Chair Francesca M. Edwardson and supporters for the overwhelming attendance and contributions. With over 3.5 million yearly visitors, Lincoln Park Zoo serves as an essential educational resource and sanctuary for wildlife.
