Boating season is in full swing for Chicagoans looking to get out on Lake Michigan this summer. While boating can be a ton of fun, it’s imperative to remember basic safety laws and guidance. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and Illinois Conservation Police have emphasized the importance of boating safety at the start of the season in May. Statistics from 2024 revealed 63 reportable boating accidents in Illinois waters, resulting in 15 fatalities and 32 injuries, according to the Illinois Conservation Police. To ensure a safe summer, these groups are urging boaters to wear life jackets and avoid operating boats while under the influence.
The same source revealed that boating incidents often occur on weekends, between noon and 6 p.m., from June to August, in clear and calm conditions. Most of these incidents occurred from boats operated by individuals aged 20 to 40, with over 100 hours of boating experience but limited formal safety training. To mitigate risks, the IDNR provides free safety courses, mandatory for operators born on or after Jan. 1, 1998.
Enforcement of operating under the influence (OUI) laws is strict, with 2024 seeing an 11% increase in OUI arrests compared to the previous year, IDNR report. Life jackets are crucial, with state law mandating personal flotation devices be available for every individual aboard. It’s important for all boaters to adhere to these regulations and ensure their safety on the water.
