Mayor Brandon Johnson announced his appointment of six new members to the Chicago Board of Education (CBE) on Wednesday, replacing nearly all positions former mayor Lori Lightfoot assigned.

The new appointees include Board President Jianan Shi and board members Mariela Estrada, Mary Fahey Hughes, Rudy Lozano, Michelle Morales and Tanya Woods. Johnson’s picks will join Lightfoot appointee Elizabeth Todd-Breland, who will serve as the board’s vice president.

New CBE members will begin their term on July 18. Johnson’s picks are the final appointed CBE members before the administration transitions to an elected representative board in 2024.

Johnson’s CBE appointees each have long-standing connections to education and the Chicago community.

Jianan Shi has served as executive director of Raise Your Hand for Illinois Public Education since 2019 and was formerly a high school science educator at Solorio Academy on Chicago’s South Side.

Mariela Estrada is the director of community engagement at the United Way of Metro Chicago and the former community engagement coordinator for the City of Chicago’s Inspector General’s Office. Mary Fahey Hughes is a manager, actor and advocate for special education, and Michelle Morales is the President of the Woods Fund

Rudy Lozano is an executive director with Global Philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase & Co and the head of The Fellowship Initiative. Tanya D. Woods is the executive director of the Westside Justice Center, a non-profit holistic legal aid clinic in East Garfield Park.

“It’s my honor to bring together such a diverse group of people from community, business, philanthropy, and elsewhere to collaborate around a vision for our schools that ensures every student has access to a fully resourced, supportive and nurturing learning environment,” Mayor Johnson said in a statement.
