Smoke from the ongoing Canadian wildfires has covered Chicago since Monday, creating intensely smoggy conditions and unhealthy air quality. According to data from the World Air Quality Index, Chicago’s air quality is the worst in the world as of Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service issued an alert via Twitter early on June 27, warning Chicagoans of low visibility due to the smoke. Conditions are predicted to last through Tuesday.

Chicago Public Schools sent a notice informing families of the unhealthy air quality and detailing their plans to move all scheduled outdoor activities indoors.

According to information from Mt. Sinai Health and air quality data source Airnow, sensitive groups and the general public should follow these tips to stay safe and reduce exposure:

  • Stay inside with windows closed as much as possible

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities

  • Keep outdoor activities short

  • Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them

  • If being outside is mandatory, wear high-quality N95 masks
